Status note: Firmus describes Southgate as a long-term initiative. ABC News reported on 22 July 2026 that a development application had been submitted, but Latrobe Council was waiting for more information before releasing it publicly. This record does not treat either statement as approval or construction.
Why this place?: Firmus points to existing industrial electricity infrastructure as one reason for considering Wesley Vale.

Important unknowns

The development application was not publicly available in the reviewed sources, so its current formal status and contents could not be checked directly.
The cooling-water source remains unsettled. Firmus says rainwater is its primary plan, while ABC News reported that an internal FAQ note referred to possible Tasmanian Irrigation water and was removed after questions. Tasmanian Irrigation said it had made no undertaking to supply Firmus.
Final scale, staging and operating resource use remain uncertain.

Record type: Proposed campus
A planned group of data-centre buildings. A proposal does not prove that approval, construction or operation will follow.
Status note: Project Ares is in two distinct environmental processes. The Commonwealth EPBC portal lists referral 2026/10560 as awaiting additional information. Separately, the NT EPA accepted the proposal for standard assessment at Stage 1 on 6 July 2026. Neither status is an approval or evidence of construction.
Why this place?: The proposal combines remote digital infrastructure with large new energy, storage and water systems.

Important unknowns

The Commonwealth EPBC process has not reached a final determination or approval.
The NT environmental assessment is still at Stage 1: Referral.
The proposal identifies groundwater from the Montejinni Limestone Aquifer in the Wiso Basin and an upper estimate of 4 GL a year. Sustainable yield, environmental effects and any extraction licence remain matters for assessment and approval.
The proposal may change substantially through assessment.
Proposed maximum capacities are not actual operating demand or use.

Evidence labels

Three different kinds of statement

Directly sourced: A fact stated in a linked planning record, regulator page, dated report or clearly attributed operator page.
PvA interpretation: A cautious explanation that connects sourced facts, such as why access to fibre, customers or power may make a location useful.
Important unknown: A gap that cannot be answered reliably from the reviewed evidence. Unknowns are kept visible rather than filled with assumptions.

How records were selected and checked

This is not a complete Australian directory. The current dataset contains 10 campus-level records chosen for geographic variety, different project stages and enough public evidence for record-by-record checking. It is not a statistical sample and cannot be used to estimate national totals. Map markers show approximate public localities rather than facility entrances or property boundaries.

Prefer statutory planning and environmental records.
Use government and regulator publications next.
Use current operator pages for what an operator publicly states.
Treat developer material cautiously, especially when a proposal is contested or early stage.
Use industry datasets for national context, not as automatic proof for individual records.
